Venus Williams, Receives Wild Card for Her Initial Australian Open in Half a Decade.

Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

The event organizers confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
