Unbeatable No More: The Reasons India's Test Cricket Reputation Lies in Ruins

The Indian cricket team's surprising 0-2 defeat to the Proteas in the recent red-ball series has sent shockwaves through the squad.

Just days ago, South Africa handed India their heaviest defeat in terms of runs, defying expectations. This represented the Proteas' first series win in India in a quarter-century and India's second defeat at home in just one year after a decade-plus without a home loss.

The winning rhythm gained during the past six months has largely dissipated and the careers of a number of cricketers - along with head coach the coach - are now uncertain.

Initial Hope Disappears

The new-look squad's strong showing in the UK this summer, under a different skipper, suggested a smooth transition following the almost concurrent exits of key players R Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli.

An easy 2-0 win over the Windies at the commencement of the home campaign enhanced that perception, till the South Africans turned up and handed out a fell blow.

The home side were a bit unlucky that skipper Gill suffered an injury early on in the initial match and took no further part in the series. However, that neither explains nor absolves the side of the terribly sub-par performance in both Tests against the opposition.

Several established players suffered, and a few members hoping for extended tenures in Tests were revealed to be not yet good enough - technically or mentally - for the Test cricket.

Worrying Trend

This was the second whitewash at home suffered by India in just over a year. In 2024, underestimated the Kiwis had pulled off a staggering 3-0 win which effectively cost India a place in the WTC final.

The fresh failure to South Africa threatens to derail India's prospects of reaching the decider of this season also.

After being third in the Test championship standings prior to the contest, India have fallen to number five. Although nine more Tests are yet to be played, half of these are against the Aussies. Usually, competing on home turf would be a major plus - even against the strong Australian side. However the failures against New Zealand and the Proteas leave little scope for such comfort.

Causes of the Fall

The national team's frailty in Test cricket has been clearly revealed. However, why the team have performed so poorly in Test matches on home soil recently is still bewildering.

In the 21st century, India were considered impregnable in red-ball cricket at home. Under sweltering weather and on tracks that favored spin bowling and aided their squad, India brooked no opposition. A rare failure, such as in the 2012-13 season against the English, was viewed as an aberration.

Currently, the team seem vulnerable on home turf.

Versus New Zealand in 2024 and the Proteas currently, India were beaten at their own game. The surfaces they developed to favor their game failed miserably, as the opposition used them more effectively, outplaying the home team's players when it counted the most.

What's Gone Wrong?

Certain analysts propose that India is failing at home because home surfaces have been changed from spinning tracks to pace-friendly pitches to get cricketers ready to succeed overseas.

Some point out that the domestic T20 league, in which many overseas players play, has taken away the mystery and hardship subcontinental pitches would present to them before.

Although there is a degree of accuracy in both analyses, it still does not explain why India's performances at home have witnessed such a staggering decline.

Various Shortcomings

Many past stars diagnose a complicated issue, not only a couple of reasons.

Experts and participants have pointed to various flaws post the team's humiliating loss to the South Africans: not respecting the foe, poor preparation, questionable picks, overconfidence, regular alterations of the team lineup, and favoring limited-overs over Test cricket.

This was clear in the displays of the squad.

Players such as Pant and Jaiswal, of whom great things were anticipated, suffered for their nonchalance, while Sudarshan, Reddy, and Jurel - who were hoping to secure their spot in the side - fell short in skill and mindset, suffering the consequences for their nonchalant approach.

Just a few - Jadeja, Bumrah, Kuldeep, Siraj and Sundar - lived up to their skill and fame - but inadequately to secure victories.

Coaching Scrutiny

The analysis also included the entire setup - selectors and support staff were also questioned, spurred on by upset followers and outspoken ex-cricketers. Under focus of the criticism was mentor Gambhir.
