The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing multiple personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
